Gum Treatments Q&A

What are gum treatments?

Gum treatments are a group of procedures designed to treat and eliminate gum disease before it gets worse.

Gum disease is a common problem that affects millions of Americans. Left unmanaged, it can lead to a variety of oral health issues, including receding gums, loose teeth, bone deterioration, and tooth loss. Gum disease also increases your risk of physical health problems, including diabetes and heart disease. By investing in gum treatments, you can preserve your smile and physical health for years to come.

Are there different types of gum treatments?

The team at Ueno Center Dental Specialists offers an array of gum treatments, including:

Deep cleanings

A dental deep cleaning, also known as gum therapy, involves your Ueno Center Dental Specialists provider carefully cleaning out plaque and tartar from between your teeth and around your gum line. This process eliminates bad bacteria and stops decay in its tracks.

Scaling and root planing

Scaling and root planing is very similar to a deep cleaning. During this gum treatment, your dentist removes all of the plaque and tartar above and below your gum line. After removing the buildup, your dentist smooths out your tooth roots — a process that helps receding gums reattach to your teeth.

Prescription medications

For more serious cases of gum disease, your dentist might recommend prescription medications. At Ueno Center Dental Specialists, the team offers several different types of medication, including antibiotic gels, oral antibiotics, enzyme suppressants, and antibiotic microspheres.

Flap surgery

If good oral hygiene and medications don’t provide adequate relief, periodontal surgery may be necessary. During flap surgery, your dentist lifts your gums back and cleans out any built-up tartar and calculus. After cleaning your teeth, your dentist sutures your gums tightly around the edges of your teeth.

Bone and tissue grafts

Left untreated, gum disease may lead to bone decay or deterioration. If this occurs, your dentist might recommend a bone or tissue graft. A bone graft involves your dentist implanting a synthetic bone material inside your jaw. Over time, the implant encourages the growth of newer, healthier bone tissue, restoring the strength and integrity of your jaw.
