Zirconia Implants: When to Consider the Metal-Free Alternative to Standard Dental Implants

Did you know there are two choices for dental implants: titanium and zirconia? There are several reasons why some people choose the second option for their implants and why it might be a better choice for your needs.

For a patient who is missing a tooth or has a tooth that’s beyond repair, implants are still the most widely used treatment option. This is because they protect the jawbone, they’re aesthetically pleasing, and they allow for normal mouth functions such as eating and speaking.

But there’s a relatively new change in the world of implants that may make you wonder: Should I get a standard titanium implant or consider a zirconia implant instead?

Here at Ueno Center Dental Specialists, we offer both options. Jeremy K. Ueno, DMD, and his team are pioneering the use of zirconia implants, which for many patients is a welcome alternative to titanium. But how can you know if this is the best choice for your needs?

Zirconia vs. titanium: two options for dental implants

Here’s a refresher: Dental implants are medical devices dentists place where a natural tooth used to be. They keep your jawline from deteriorating and to allow you to have the best quality of life possible, with regular mouth movements and use.

Dental implants tend to keep your mouth healthier as well.

A dental implant is made up of three parts: the implant, the abutment, and the crown. The crown is what most people think of because that’s what looks like a tooth. It’s made of porcelain or a similar material.

The implant itself is what fuses with the jawbone and must be compatible with your body. This is usually made of titanium.

But some people now choose zirconia instead of titanium for their implants. Why do some make this choice, and what are the benefits?

Why choose zirconia for your dental implant?

There are many reasons you might choose a zirconia implant over titanium. Consider these below and ask yourself if a metal-free alternative might be right for you.

Metal allergy

Metal allergies are quite common. Even if you’re unsure if you have a metal allergy, you could still have a reaction to a metal introduced into your body. For this reason, some patients prefer a nonmetal option like zirconia over titanium.

Holistic dentistry

If holistic treatment is important to you, you may want to choose zirconia for your dental implant. Some people don’t feel comfortable with the use of a metal being introduced into their bodies, and the possibility that the titanium could leach into the body is very real.

If you’re concerned about this, zirconia is a much more holistic option.

Aesthetic quality

Zirconia and titanium implants are both meant to be hidden from view, while the crown is what should show when you have a dental implant. But sometimes the post is visible from certain angles.

A titanium post is silver while a zirconia post appears to resemble the white of a natural tooth and looks more natural as a result.

Oral health

For most of our patients, titanium implants are safe and don’t interfere with overall oral health. But some studies have shown that zirconia is actually less likely to allow bacterial colonies to form.

Overall function

Through a process called osseointegration, the implant fuses with your jawbone. The zirconia implant may be more compatible with your body than titanium. While both types of implants go through this process, zirconia may offer a better response from the bodily tissue surrounding it, making it feel, look, and function more naturally.

Is a zirconia implant right for me?

Zirconia implants aren’t always necessary, and titanium can often work just as well. But depending on your specific needs, this option may be better for your overall health. Discuss it with our team to ensure you’re getting the best quality treatment.
