For some patients, a trip to the dentist can feel like going to a haunted house — the fear, the anxiety, not knowing what to expect. Unfortunately, dental fear is extremely common in the United States, and sometimes parents even avoid bringing their children

Some patients are more nervous about the needles required for anesthesia than anything else.

Even if you aren’t afraid of needles, getting local anesthesia can be a pain — literally. And it can make it hard for you to go about your day-to-day life until the numbing wears off.

But did you know there’s a treatment that requires no needles, no pain, and no numbing that goes on for hours? That’s right. The Wand® Single Tooth Anesthesia System® (STA) allows you to get treatment like a dental filling without the usual fuss of local anesthesia.

At Ueno Center Dental Specialists, we provide STA treatment as an alternative to conventional anesthesia. Jeremy K. Ueno, DMD, and the rest of our dental team love this option. And our patients love it too. Let’s learn more about why.

Why some patients shy away from anesthesia

Dental anesthesia, as we mentioned, can be scary for some. A person who hates needles will be put off even more by the concept of a needle going into their mouth.

Sadly, this can keep people from getting the treatments they need, such as a dental filling, because the process is often worse — or impossible — without anesthesia.

On the other hand, you might not be scared of needles, but maybe have had bad experiences with anesthesia in the past. Either you got frustrated because the numbness didn’t wear off for over an hour, or you had uncomfortable side effects like ringing in your ears, dizziness, or a metal taste in your mouth.

Even though it’s much milder than general anesthesia, local anesthesia affects a large part of your mouth, usually one whole side. It can be difficult to talk and eat, and some people struggle with biting the insides of their cheeks.

Altogether, this can make procedures that require local anesthesia much more difficult than they need to be.

Choosing STA for a dental procedure

Though the issues with local anesthesia may be mild or severe, depending on your personal interpretation, ask yourself, “Do I have to go through with this?” The answer nowadays is no.

STA is an effective option that allows us to numb just one tooth or only the area we’re working on. This removes the issues people hate like numbness that goes on for hours and other weird side effects. With STA, when you’re done with your procedure, your mouth feels perfectly normal.

STA also helps people who feel terrified of needles get anesthesia in a different way. STA uses a wand that slips between your tooth and your gum line, making it easy for us to administer the proper amount of the drug, which is determined by a sensor.

For a procedure like a dental filling that used to require anesthesia via a scary and sometimes painful shot, STA is a fantastic option that makes the process so much easier.

STA removes the fear and pain from your dental procedure

With STA, you don’t have to worry about whether a simple dental procedure will hurt or whether you’ll need to reschedule your day afterward. Instead, you can get your treatment and continue on with your day.
