Despite being preventable, gum disease is incredibly common in the United States, with 4 of 10 adults over 30 suffering from this condition. While it’s always best to prevent an issue like this, we offer a number of treatments for gum disease, including deep cleaning followed by Arestin®.
At Ueno Center Dental Specialists, we offer safe, effective treatment for gum disease that allows our patients to more effectively prevent problems down the road. This combination of treatments also promotes healing for those who have experienced periodontal disease.
Our founder, Jeremy K. Ueno, DMD, as well as the rest of our team, is focused on helping our patients have the healthiest mouths possible, and the gums are just as important to this kind of wellness as the teeth.
Let us give you the lowdown on how to fight back against gum disease today.
Unfortunately, many people struggle with gum disease at some point during their lives.
The first stage is gingivitis, which is reversible but can create symptoms such as bleeding and swelling gums, pain, and bad breath. This happens because plaque, which you can usually remove with your toothbrush, builds up around and under the gum line.
When plaque does this, we often can’t reach it with normal cleanings, which means it hardens into tartar. The longer this goes unchecked, the more likely it is to worsen.
Still, if you’re able to seek treatment while gingivitis is the present threat, it’s easier to manage than advanced periodontal disease.
But if gingivitis is able to advance and worsen into periodontitis, surgery is often necessary. The condition also may not be fully reversible in some instances, and tooth loss and decay are also very common. This is why people with gingivitis should seek treatment right away.
You can't perform this cleaning at home with a toothbrush and floss. A deep cleaning is something only your provider can do in-office. It requires the use of certain tools that allow us to remove plaque and tartar from around and under the gum line.
The first part of the procedure is called scaling. We use a tool to scrape the plaque and tartar away from the pockets between your teeth and your gums. A local anesthetic minimizes your discomfort, and most patients tolerate this well, experiencing little or no pain.
Next, we do something called root planing, which is the process of removing dentin from your tooth roots and smoothing them out. It’s a way of promoting healthy attachment between your gums and your teeth, which occurs naturally after the procedure.
Finally, we end the process by applying Arestin to the gum line. This is a local antibiotic that kills any lingering bacteria and prevents it from coming back. Arestin helps to keep you protected from bacteria for 90 days after your procedure.
At Ueno Center Dental Specialists, we highly recommend this procedure as a way to treat mild or moderate gingivitis and to prevent worsening gum disease. With the help of scaling, root planing, and Arestin, you can get rid of uncomfortable symptoms and avoid more serious issues down the road.
We’re happy to schedule an appointment for your deep cleaning and provide you with all the benefits of these procedures so you can avoid advanced gum disease and its serious side effects.
