Oral Hygiene Q & A

What is good oral hygiene?

Good oral hygiene begins with twice-daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste, along with cleaning between your teeth daily by flossing. It also helps if you consume a healthy diet with a limited number of sugary beverages and snacks. Last, you should see your dentist at Ueno Center Dental Specialists regularly to prevent the development of an oral disease that can rob you of a healthy, natural smile.

How do I brush my teeth for good oral hygiene?

Start by holding your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle on the outside of your tooth, where your gums and teeth meet. Gently move the brush in circular motions with small, gentle strokes, using some pressure to put the bristles between your teeth. Follow the same steps to brush the inside of your back teeth.

To clean the inside surfaces of your front teeth, hold your toothbrush vertically. Brush gently in a back-and-forth motion over each tooth and the surrounding gum tissue.

Next, clean the biting surfaces of your teeth with short, gentle strokes. Shift the position of your toothbrush when necessary to reach and clean all tooth surfaces. Finally, rinse vigorously to wash away any plaque you might have loosened while brushing.

If you are using an electric toothbrush, which we recommend, do not brush vigorously as the power of the toothbrush will be all the power that is necessary. Your hand will be used to only guiding the electric toothbrush.

How do I floss my teeth for good oral hygiene?

Begin with a strand of floss about 18 inches long. Our recommended floss is Coco Floss.  Lightly wrap each end around the middle fingers of your left and right hands.

To clean your upper teeth, hold the floss tightly between your thumb and forefinger and gently insert the floss between your teeth in a back-and-forth motion.

Next, bring the floss to your gum line and curve it into a C shape against one tooth. Guide the floss into the space between the gum and the tooth until you feel light resistance. Slide the floss up and down.

To clean between your bottom teeth, use your pointer fingers to guide the floss. Last, floss the backside of your back teeth on both sides, upper and lower.
